How does Nature Opportunities for Businesses Work?

Aim of 'Nature Opportunities for Businesses'

In collaboration with other natural environment organisations, the Nature Commission aims to help partner corporations with environmental groups to improve access to local conservation projects that require funding; improve corporate staff knowledge regarding the importance of our natural environment and how it links to their business activities; help to improve access to on-island volunteering opportunities for business to engage with and contribute to nature; and help businesses find short-term ways to use their skills to support local environmental charities.

This initiative does not directly provide funding or constitute responsibility

Instead, the purpose is to act as a directory to better promote and make more widely available environmental-related opportunities, so that businesses can easily find information and engage with environmental initiatives. The Nature Commission’s promotion of opportunities does not constitute responsibility as the delivery body for the opportunities, unless the Nature Commission is the lead on that activity.

How it works

The Nature Opportunities for Businesses initiative is for information sharing only. Eligible organisations may apply to add their relevant opportunities to 'Nature Opportunities for Businesses' by submitting a completed application form. The details will be reviewed by the Nature Commission Team, further information requested as necessary, and the information uploaded onto the relevant initiative webpage on the Nature Commission website. The Nature Opportunities for Businesses initiative webpage will be promoted with local businesses and corporations on an ongoing basis.

Once a business has identified an opportunity they wish to proceed with through 'Nature Opportunities for Businesses', or if they would like to find out more about an opportunity, communications must take place between that businesses and the relevant organisation leading the activity - this should occur outside of the ‘Nature Opportunities for Business’ initiative. Contact details of the organisation leading the activity will be required as part of the application for this purpose.

Where there is successful partnership of a businesses with an opportunity, any reporting and/or evaluation of the activity required or requested by the partnered business will be the responsibility of the organisation leading the opportunity. Additionally, the Nature Commission will not accept or administer any funds for any opportunity where the Nature Commission is not the organisation leading the activity.

Where a project has been funded through successful partnership with a business, that project will then be moved from the Nature Opportunities for Business initiative Project front page. The Projects front page will only promote projects not yet fully funded. The intention is for new projects that require funding to be added once an application for them to be promoted through Nature Opportunities for Businesses has been received by the Nature Commission. For projects that have received funding, the associated page will be updated to note which businesses has supported (if able to share), and will be moved to the 'Previously Funded Projects' webpage. This will enable promotion of the business providing the support to be ongoing.

All education opportunities will continue to be promoted through Nature Opportunities for Businesses, including after a local businesses has taken advantage of that opportunity. Education opportunities will only be removed from the initiative if the organisation leading the opportunity is no longer able to provide that opportunity, or they do not wish that opportunity to be promoted through Nature Opportunities for Businesses any further.

Nature Opportunities for Businesses will be maintained by the Nature Commission, so that all opportunities promoted via the initiative are live.

Following up on an opportunity

The Nature Commission may request further information about successful partnerships achieved through Nature Opportunities for Businesses, to better understand success and to enable improvement of the initiative.
